History


The Office of the Auditor-General was established in 1963, initially led by Director of Audit, Mr. Bragg, under the name Basutoland Audit Office. In 1970, the office was renamed to its current title, and the position of Director of Audit was elevated to Auditor-General, with Mr. Harrison taking on the role. Mr. Bragg served until 1970, succeeded by Mr. Harrison until 1972, and subsequently by Mr. Tarr from 1973 to 1985.

CURRENT AUDITOR-GENERAL
Ms. ‘Mathabo Gail Makenete officially assumed the role of Auditor-General of the Kingdom of Lesotho on 1st January 2023.

FORMER ACTING AUDITOR-GENERAL
Mrs. ‘Mafani Masoabi assumed the role of Acting Auditor-General following the retirement of Mrs. Besetsa.

2004
FORMER AUDITOR GENERAL
Mrs. Lucy Liphafa served as Auditor-General for 16 years until her retirement in 2020.

1994
FORMER AUDITOR-GENERAL
Mr. Matsobane Putsoa served as Auditor-General until 1997.

2020
FORMER ACTING AUDITOR-GENERAL
Ms. Monica Besetsa took on the role of Acting Auditor-General following the retirement of Mrs. Liphafa.

1997
FORMER AUDITOR-GENERAL
Mr. Mahlelebe David Lepitikoe served as Acting Auditor-General from 1994 to 1995. He then officially assumed office in 1997 and held the position until 2002.

1985
FORMER AUDITOR-GENERAL
Mr. Selae P. Molapo assumed the role Auditor-General in 1985 and held the position until 1994.
